Of all the speaking engagements Paul Newman has made, \u201cnever before have Papuan students been involved in a presentation,\u201d until March 23, 2017 at Corban University.\u00a0 A former missionary, Newman engaged the community in a\u00a0conversation on culture and the love and\u00a0sovereignty of God in Papua, Indonesia.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a boy in 1968, a\u00a0tragic plane crash in\u00a0the remote Seng Valley\u00a0in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua\u00a0left\u00a0Newman the only surviving member of his immediate\u00a0family.\u00a0 A nearby village, hitherto hostile to the Gospel,\u00a0looked after him\u00a0for three days after the accident.\u00a0\u00a0During his recovery, Newman built a relationship with\u00a0an elder\u00a0in the village – preparing the way for\u00a0future\u00a0missionaries\u00a0to reach\u00a0the\u00a0Yali people in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n

Newman had no idea that this relationship would be used years later to bring God\u2019s word to the Yali people.\u00a0 God used a personal tragedy to break hearts of stone and seek and save the Yali.<\/span><\/p>\n

God has brought hope out of disaster – the\u00a0village later\u00a0appropriated a broken wing from the crash site as a communion table.<\/span><\/p>\n

Newman had spent his childhood in West Papua while his father worked as an accountant for Mission Aviation Fellowship\u00a0(MAF) coordinating the purchase and\u00a0delivery of supplies by plane to missionaries in the interior highlands.\u00a0 After the accident, he moved to the greater Los Angeles\u00a0area to live with extended family and continue his education.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mission Aviation Fellowship is a Christian organization that flies small airplanes to unreachable areas to bring hope to isolated people by extending God\u2019s hand.\u00a0 They have worked very closely with the Indonesian armed forces during natural disasters throughout the Indonesian islands.<\/span><\/p>\n

Newman thus grew up astride two cultures: rural Papua and urban America.\u00a0 Stepping across cultures\u00a0equipped him\u00a0to\u00a0understand the unique challenges facing international students in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking to\u00a0an audience\u00a0of 30 Corban University students and community members, Newman admitted that\u00a0Papuan students in the US\u00a0“know more than I do – they know more stories.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Newman demonstrated cultural greetings\u00a0with students Deswan Wanimbo, Lemison Jikwa, and others and\u00a0discussed differences in\u00a0cultural norms of eye contact and personal space between Papua and the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n

Newman and Corban University professor Orin Kidd also introduced the audience to translation of the New Testament and efforts to deliver the Bible<\/a><\/span>\u00a0to the Kimyal people in Korupun.\u00a0Student Deswan Wanimbo recognized his home village in the MAF footage.<\/span><\/p>\n

The audience emerged with a deeper understanding of the experiences that God uses to shape His Kingdom into a diverse, multi-ethnic body.<\/span><\/p>\n
