A report by the Institute of International Education found that 1 in 10 U.S. undergraduates studies abroad before graduating (as of academic year 2014\/15).<\/strong><\/p>\n

The number of US students studying abroad has increased four-fold since 1989\/90.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Europe absorbs the majority of US students studying abroad as of academic year 2014\/15.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As global experiences grow\u00a0in importance to U.S. undergraduates, how can students take advantage of study abroad? \u00a0What are the benefits of study abroad? \u00a0What pitfalls must we avoid?<\/p>\n

The Center for Global Engagement’s first Study Abroad 101 seminar brought together prospective students and alumni of the American-Bavarian Exchange (AMBEX) to discuss these questions. \u00a0Seminar participants discussed\u00a0culture, communication and the challenges of re-adjusting from Germany to the U.S.<\/p>\n

1. Plan early<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a>
Understanding one’s financial assets, options and limitations is key to making an informed choice about study abroad.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

AMBEX alum Morgan Nims (Fall ’16) encouraged\u00a0prospective students to start the AMBEX\u00a0application process<\/a> as soon as possible. \u00a0Visiting Financial Aid and talking with her academic adviser helped Nims prepare for the semester abroad.<\/p>\n

The deadline for the AMBEX Scholarship Application<\/a> is March 31, 2017.<\/p>\n

2. Learn the language<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"How<\/a><\/p>\n

Learning a foreign language is not required for Corban\u00a0study abroad programs.<\/p>\n

However, learning German before going to AMBEX helps students engage more effectively with German culture:<\/p>\n
